We walk different stages of life towards growth. Just like from being a baby to an adult. The stage of infancy, toddlerhood, preschool years, early school years, adolescence, young adulthood, middle adulthood, late adulthood. I believe this theory applies to everything we do just like beginning a business or an organisation, etc. It will begin as a new born and later on grow into an adult but the only difference is that if managed well, it will never die out.
Albinism Umbrella a non-governmental organization has walked a journey towards greatness. Albinism Umbrella is a Non-Governmental Organization was founded by Ms. Olive Namutebi and Phenamyra Nagujja in 2015 and incorporated in 2017 with the ultimate aim of having a joint voice for all persons with albinism in Uganda and also to empower them to fully engage in social-economic activities that directly improve their living conditions while promoting and protecting their lives.
It was also established with an aim at changing the narrative about albinism; to amplify the voice of rights holders and stop the wide spread of discrimination and inhumane activities against Persons with Albinism.
The organization has taken part in different activities country wide to fight against discrimination and stigma from the public towards persons with Albinism by sensitizing, raising awareness and putting up facilitation structures by partnering up with different organizations and institutions that have tried to address the issues with different approaches for example the parliamentary fundraising walks that was spearheaded by Albinism Umbrella to raise resources for the establishment of a rehabilitation and skilling center for persons with albinism.
Albinism Umbrella is looking into establishing a rehabilitation and skilling center where persons with Albinism that go through mental and physical torture can be given the right treatment and also different skills that will open doors to different opportunities for them. The journey to the rehabilitation center got Albinism Umbrella to carry out a profiling activity so as to have statistics on the number of persons with Albinism in different regions on the country. The spatial mapping event was carried out in 2018- 2019 around all the regions of the country. Albinism Umbrella was able to engage with different policy makers on the spatial mapping report launch with the aim of laying strategies to support efforts towards empowerment, inclusion and improvement in socio-economic activities of persons with albinism in Uganda.
During there the spatial mapping event, they were able to meet different persons with Albinism who thought that they were the only people on earth born with the condition. For instance Scovia Amumpaire , a young girl who went through torture because of how she was born and also neglected by her parents. This activity assisted Albinism Umbrella in picking out and helping persons with Albinism with assistance and also sending many back to school. They were able to give out sun screen and also record a number of Persons with Albinism that need some other kind of assistance they could not extend directly.
Albinism Umbrella has worked with different organizations towards bettering the living conditions of persons with Albinism and also partnered with the government and Uganda National Human Rights boards towards coming up with up with national action plan to address the different torture conditions of persons with Albinism.
We are working hard and strongly to see that the Albinism fraternity can live a normal life like any other without any hardships from others.
