As the International Albinism Awareness Day, IAAD 2023 comes closer: Albinism Umbrella and its partners have united to ensure that the voices of persons with albinism are heard so that they fully benefit from their rights regardless of the color of their skin. This year’s theme is “Inclusion is Strength”. This day is very vital in raising awareness of albinism as a condition across the country for the establishment of a safe, secure and conducive environment for them to live a life of dignity.
Albinism Umbrella has chosen to focus on this celebration specifically on health, education and livelihood/ Uganda is a heterogenous nation with over 50 tribes, each with their own unique superstitious perception on albinism rooted down for generations. More cases of abuse of persons with albinism have been recorded especially towards children.
Today, these incidents not only affect children but adults too. The celebration joins the “Beyond This Skin” campaign which Albinism Umbrella has been involved in for the past few months to raise awareness and change the narrative about albinism. A series of activities under the “Beyond This Skin” campaign have been carried our focusing on educating the public about albinism. The International Albinism Awareness Day 2023 celebrations shall be held at the Liberation Square in Masaka district with Albinism Umbrella launching a number of activities that aim to tackle stigma and discrimination against Albinism in Uganda.
