Albinism Umbrella joins the rest of the country in celebrating Uganda’s 64th Independence Day, commemorating the historic day on 9 October when Uganda attained independence and began its journey as a sovereign nation.
As Uganda reflects on more than six decades of nationhood, this milestone offers an opportunity to celebrate the country’s progress while renewing our collective commitment to building a society where every citizen enjoys equal rights, dignity, and opportunities to thrive.
For Albinism Umbrella, independence goes beyond national sovereignty. It also means ensuring that every Ugandan, including persons with albinism, can participate fully and meaningfully in the country’s social, economic, and political life without discrimination or exclusion.
For persons with albinism, meaningful inclusion requires access to essential services and opportunities, including affordable sun protection and skin cancer prevention services, quality eye health care and assistive devices, inclusive education, and sustainable livelihood opportunities. It also requires stronger protection against stigma, discrimination, violence, and harmful misconceptions surrounding albinism.
As we celebrate this important national milestone, Albinism Umbrella reaffirms its commitment to advocating for the rights, wellbeing, and inclusion of persons with albinism across Uganda. We recognise that building an inclusive nation requires collective action from government, development partners, civil society organisations, communities, and individuals.
We extend our sincere appreciation to our members, partners, and supporters for their continued collaboration and dedication to advancing the rights of persons with albinism. Together, we can contribute to a Uganda where diversity is respected, opportunities are accessible, and no one is left behind.
As we look towards the future, may Uganda continue to grow in unity, equality, and shared prosperity, ensuring that every citizen has the opportunity to contribute to the nation’s development.
Albinism Umbrella wishes all Ugandans a peaceful, reflective, and meaningful 64th Independence Anniversary.
For God and My Country.
