Having accomplished the spatial mapping research and gathered credible data on persons with albinism (2018 & 2021) in all the four regions of the country, Albinism Umbrella embarked on forming and building the capacity of support groups as a mechanism to advocate for service delivery and inclusion of rights holders in mainstream development processes. The envisaged impact was that the groups formed from participants own free will, mentored and developed to be self-reliant would be a potential source of power that would drive social inclusion.
As a result, 7 selected groups with a composition of persons with albinism, care givers to persons with albinism and persons with other disabilities have been formed and empowered with various skills, including in advocacy, leadership, governance, to steer up their inclusion in development processes. The same groups have been linked to government programs like special grant, Emyooga, among others and so far 2 groups from Wakiso and Kamwenge have benefited from the special grant program. This will not only support in boosting their income levels but also will enhance social cohesion amongst persons with disabilities.
The table below shows the number of groups formed across the four regions of the country.
